The development of the Dog.

In order to understand a dogs behaviour, it is necessary to have knowledge about  its development from birth to death. This knowledge is important in order to be able to train the Puppy , so it can grow up and become a well-function adult Dog, who you can have pleasure of  for the next 12 - 16 years.

Shortly I will describe this development:

Birth - 2 weeks:

Birth-change:
The most important to the Puppy is to suck, sleep and keeping warm. It must have close contact to the Mother and the Siblings. The Mother licks the Puppies in the behind, in order to stimulate urine and faeces from the Puppies.
The Puppies get open eyes about 14 days old, but is not able to see much.

2 - 3 weeks: Sense development :
You can see Teeth coming at the Puppies, and sight, hearing and the ability of balance is developing. The Puppies begin to get urineting and faeces my itself. I keep The Puppies in my hand several times a day in order to get them used to people. The Puppies get their nails cut for the time, as they else can tore the Mother when they are sucking her.

3- 5 weeks: 1st part of  the socialisingphase:
About 3 weeks old the Puppies begin to be curiously and want to look for contact with the surrounding world. React to loud sounds. The sight , the hearing and the sense of smell are developing and the Puppies are now able to bark, wave with the tail and play with the other puppies.
They begin to eat firm food,  and leave the sleeping place in order to empty its bowels or to urineting.

I take each Puppy out ind order to play with it several times a day and let them listen to the CD from the Danish Kennel Club with different sounds on a very low level. Kindly strange people are allowed to hold the Puppies. It will give the Puppy certainty to meet strange People later on.

5 -7 weeks: 2nd part of the socialisingphase:
Th Puppy takes part in group-activities and begins to find his place in the the pack. The Puppy practises in domination - and submitplays, which teach the Puppy to solve conflicts.
At this time I begin to learn the Puppy to walk with a leash and it will get used to a Car, a transport case and all the common sounds in a home, together with sounds from the CD, which is played gradually louder.
The Mother brings up the Puppies. Sight and hearing work and the Puppy´s movements are more coordinated now. The Puppy needs more  firm food at this time.

7 - 12 weeks: 3rd part of the socialisingphase :
In this period the Puppy is  open, curious and enterprising. It is susceptible to adaptation, and this period is suitable for the Puppy to leave the Kennel ind order to work up its belonging to the new Family.
In this period I have got the Puppies used to drive in a Car, walk at my left side and the Puppy has met children, grown-ups and other Dogs in a kindly way in the Kennel and in City-area.
The Puppy is now eating without supplement from the Mother, and house training has started. It begins to learn to come when its name is called.

3- 4 Months: Half sex-maturing:
The Testosteronproduction are increased  at both Males and Females. It cause more desire to dominate. The Puppy get easily scared. It try to find his place in the order of rang. The Puppy is very engaged to please its leader (owner). It likes to be near of the leader, but also likes to explore the surrounding World. The first teeth are changed.
I begin to train for Dogshow ,when the Puppy are in this age  and it has got chew-things as for example oxbone, pigears in order to relieve the sore teeth.

4 - 7 Months: 1st calm period:
It is a calm time for the Puppy, who has an aptitude to concentrate himself and in this way is much more impressionable for training. I trained  to Dogshow and exhibit in Puppy-Class.
The Puppy has now both milk Teeth and the permanent Teeth and needs a veterinary removes the milk Teeth.

7 - 10 Months: Physically sex-maturing:
The Bitch has her first heat. The young Dog is unconcentrated and forgetful. The Male begins to cock its leg and defends his territory. Both the Male and the Female can be unkindly and  breaking things in the Home. I don´t train very much at this time, but  try to maintain what the Dog has learned,

10 - 17 Months: 2nd calm period:
The young Dog  acts rational. Bitchs can have their second heat. I continue now the training and the Dog should now be able to behave at a show with self-confidently behavour

17 - 22 Months: The mental maturing:
The muscles has finshed  the development. Now developed the mental maturing and the dominating
become more distinctly. I will like my Bitchs to have their first litter in this period.

22 Months - 5-8 Years:

The grown-up Dog:
Now must the reward be present, if the training and the development of the Dog has been normal.
The cooperation between the Person and the Dog works optimally.Perhaps in this period my Bitchs get  3-4 more litters.

5-8 Years - ?

Old age:
The
physical functions of the Dog reduced. Musclestiffness and rheumatism can arise. Teeth begin to loosen and drop out.. I walk shorter distance with the old  Dog, but daily exercise is important also in this last time of the Dog´s life.
As the dog don´t have so much exercise as before , must the Food be adapted, so the old Dog not get overweight.

To choose a  Russian Toy puppy

Before you talk to a breeder, you have to decide following:
Male or female?
What colour?
Puppy or adult dog?

Visit more than one breeder, and ask all the questions you need answers to.
Remember: It is a bad breeder, who does not answer your questions, so do not buy your new Russian Toy there!
You have to see at least the mother to your puppy, and if you can not see the father, demand  to see a picture of him.
When you visit the breeder, watch the enviroment of the dogs. Are the dogs shy or aggressive?
If they are
- do not buy your new Russian Toy there!
What sort of temperament has the parents( or just the mother)? More than likely, your puppy will tend to have the same temperament as the parents ( or the mother)

It is important to bring the right dog back home. you have to live with him/her for the next many years.

First time at home

When bringing home your new Russian Toy:
Have the dog sleep in your bedroom for the first two or three nights. By then he/she should be ready to stay on his/her bed in his/her assigned place. Two or three nights of sleeping in your bedroom should also be enough for the dog to get adjusted to his/her new enviroment.

In the morning, you have to carry he/she out outside or to a place covered with newspapers. You will need to carry him/her because he may not be able to walk that distance by him- / herself without peeing until he is abaut ten or twelve weeks of age.

While training your dog, you have to make him/her want to do what you want him/her to. You can´t make him/her do stuff unless it is fun. Otherwise you are wasting both your time and his/ hers.
Try to make your Russian Toy´s training so fun that it becomes his/her favorite activity. This will make learning much easier and more enjoyable.

It is important to begin socializing your Russian Toy as soon as possible. Let him/her interact with other animals and people so that he/she will be friendly but learn good manners.
